Waubonsee Community College

Program Overview

  • The program is designed as a two-year program at approximately 15 credit hours per semester (not including Summer).  All tuition, class fees, and books for the program will be paid for by the company.   Most of the classes are in the evening and meet at the Sugar Grove Campus.  Some classes may be available online.
  • The participant would work at MTH/P&W as a full-time employee, but class time and homework time would count towards the 40-hour work week.  Work schedules will be determined before the start of each semester.  Each day, the participant will be expected to clock in/out as they would for any normal job, except that they will be attending school either in-person or remotely during class times, and then allotted additional time at work to complete homework.  All other times the participant will be expected to perform work in their currently scheduled job rotation.  Job rotations are expected to make up approximately 50-60% of the normal 40-hour work week, but may vary according to class load.
  • During the Two years of schooling, participants will be rotated to different job roles within the organization that will give them experiences important to becoming a good machinist, as well as broadening their exposure to other possible career paths that could become available if CNC machining is not the ultimate interest.  These rotations may include assembly, pump testing, deburring, inspection, tool room machining, CNC machining, CNC programming, Warehouse, Drafting, Engineering, Sales clerk, patternmaking, and various positions in our metal casting foundry (P&W).
  • If accepted into the Earn & Learn program, the participant would start working full time at $16/hr which then increases to $17/hr after 90 days, at which time they would have the option to purchase health insurance and other benefits.  After enrollment in the Waubonsee Associate in Applied Science Advanced Manufacturing degree program, the candidate would receive four wage increases of $1.50/hr each after the completion of 15, 30, 45 and then 60 credit hours of the program.   This assumes the candidate maintains a B average and no individual class grades less than a C.  Class grades below a C will have to be retaken.  If the candidate successfully completes the 60 credit hour Associates Degree program, they should then be earning at least $23/hr.  At that point the candidate may enroll in the next available one week factory training session in Florence, KY to learn Integrex machine tool operations.  Upon successful completion of this course the employee would be given an additional $1/hr which would then bring compensation up to at least $24/hr.
  • Upon completion of the program, the employee may be offered a full time job as a machinist or at the company’s option, another role that is mutually acceptable.  At this point, employees may choose to continue their education under our tuition reimbursement plan.  This program could reimburse your costs of tuition, lab fees, and books for attaining a bachelor’s degree from an institution like Northern Illinois University, or other specialized training, or Leadership classes that could take you in any number of directions and career paths within the organization from Engineering to Management.  Consult HR for a listing of typical career paths you can follow.

Program Requirements:

  • Employee/Participants must maintain attendance within work policy (for class and work), GPA (B average or better), No major Values or work policy violations (in our judgement).
  • In return for the substantial investment that MTH will make in the participant’s education, they will be required to sign a commitment to work for MTH for a minimum of two years after completion of the degree program (at our option) or pay back the cost of the program which is approximately $10,000 in total.
  • If for any reason the participant does not complete the program, the work commitment will be prorated according to the number of hours completed out of the 60 required, and the participant may finish their commitment to the company in another job role that they are qualified for, or they will pay back the cost of the program to that point.
  • If the participant is terminated for misconduct or repeatedly fails to put forth the effort to attend and successfully complete classes, the costs of the program to that point will be reimbursed to the company, including by payroll deduction from their last check(s).
  • If the company chooses to terminate its relationship with the participant for any reason not relating to the participant’s actions or effort (such as a layoff, lack of work, etc.), the Participant will be released from any work commitment or expenses relating to the program.
