MTH Pumps Environmental Policy

MTH believes that our planet is a fragile and limited resource that requires everyone’s cooperation to protect for the health and welfare of future generations. To do our part, MTH has made a commitment to Environmental Responsibility by making it a core part of our corporate Mission Statement and will attempt to fulfill that by:

  • Complying with environmental laws

  • Searching for ways to reduce, reuse or recycle materials and energy, and using sustainable ones where possible

  • Reducing or eliminating waste and the use of materials and processes that are damaging to the environment

  • Communicating, promoting, and educating our Team as well as the partners we do business with about our environmental issues, requirements and goals

  • Assessing our environmental performance and continually trying to improve it

Environmental Policy is sought after by MTH utilizing the following techniques:

plastic-recycle electronics recycle water recycle
styrofoam recycle

MTH Sustainability Projects

  • Paper & Plastic recycling: The company separates recyclable items from its waste stream and contracts with general waste haulers that utilize sorting facilities to further separate recyclable items like paper and plastic.

  • MTH has an electronic waste program which utilizes a specialized waste hauler to help keep potentially hazardous and/or recyclable electronic materials out of general landfills.

  • Scrap metal chips and solids from our production processes are hauled away and melted down to create new raw materials.

  • Waste oil recycling: Our machine tool coolant is skimmed for waste oil removal and stored along with other sources of waste lubricating oils.  The oil is picked up regularly for recycling into new lubricants.

  • Machine coolant recycling: Traditionally our machine shop produced several hundred gallons of waste coolant every year which needed to be hauled away as mildly hazardous waste.  Since installation of a coolant recycling system in late 2016, we haven’t yet needed to dispose of any waste coolant.

  • Reusable crates – we have reduced packaging waste by using plastic / returnable crates for certain parts that are shipped to, and returned from, outside worksites.

  • Multi-pack packaging is used for higher quantity pump shipments to reduce the amount of cardboard used compared to individual boxing for each pump.

  • Unusable cardboard from incoming shipments is broken down and compressed into large bales for sale to a recycler.

  • Styrofoam recycling: As part of a weekly truck delivery to a local customer, we collect and drop off our waste Styrofoam packaging to a nearby recycler who melts the material back down for reuse in new packaging.

  • Wooden Pallets: Pallets from incoming shipments are reused where possible for outgoing pump shipments.  Broken pallets are gathered and returned to a company (Service Pallet, Inc.) that specializes in pallet refurbishment and the unrepairable pallets and scrap lumber are ground up for mulch.

  • Geothermal Heat pump – Our Assembly Dept. has a geothermal heating and cooling system that utilizes the nearly constant temperature of the Earth to dramatically reduce the amount of electricity required to provide comfort cooling while in most cases eliminating the need to burn fossil fuels to make heat.  They provide three to four units of energy for every one unit used to power the system which is 3-4 times more efficient than traditional HVAC systems.

  • Mini-split heat pumps – these variable speed ductless heating and A/C units are decentralized to provide spot heating and cooling appropriate to individual rooms and offices and do not suffer transport heat losses through ductwork. This increases efficiency by approximately 50% by providing “zone control” and using a variable speed compressor.

  • Waste heat reuse: The main production area gets almost all of its winter heating from waste heat produced by our primary CNC production equipment which negates the need to burn any fossil fuels for approximately 20,000 square feet in all but the coldest temperatures.

  • On Demand water heaters – Tankless water heaters avoid the standby heat losses associated with heating water in storage type heaters when there is no one around to use it.  These can be 24%–34% more energy efficient than conventional storage tank water heaters.

  • High speed air hand dryers - A study concluded that over a five-year period, the production, transportation and electricity use of an air hand dryer is responsible for the same amount of carbon as a car traveling about 3,169 miles. Using paper towels over the same period results in the carbon equivalent of a car traveling about 9,000 miles, almost three times greater efficiency.

  • Lighting: We have changed over and now utilize LED lighting in ~95% of fixtures in an effort to reduce electricity usage.

  • Fans: Fans utilized in the production areas were replaced with new ones with higher efficiency motors which reduces electrical consumption.

  • Air compressors: MTH has consolidated its air compressors into one high efficiency variable speed scroll compressor unit that only runs as fast as needed to supply current compressed air needs.  This dramatically reduces the amount of electricity needed to provide for our compressed air requirements.

  • Our propane powered industrial trucks were all replaced with electric equivalents with high efficiency smart chargers to reduce carbon emissions

  • Use of duplexing printers to reduce paper usage

  • Water bottle filling stations to reduce plastic bottle usage

  • Product compliance with RoHS, REACH, and WEEE requirements as requested.

  • Use of washable plates & utensils for company events instead of paper/plastic

  • Motion sensor lighting in restrooms and over machine tools operating 24/7

  • Low VOC Water-based parts washing solution which is recycled

  • Sending invoices, quotes and other company communications via email insofar as possible and distributing paper catalogs by request only.

MTH Environmental Policy Metrics and Results

Back to Who is MTH Pumps

The data and information listed below is a snapshot of the positive impact MTH strives to achieve through our Sustainability Projects. Each year we continue to expand the project list and determine ways to improve on our existing projects and goals.

  • Corporate Vehicle Fleet – MTH is transitioning from gasoline-only vehicles (with their associated carbon footprint size) over to “Greener / Cleaner” hybrid and all-electric vehicles. Since purchasing and introducing hybrid technology in the company vehicle fleet, our average MPG results have soared from a typical 18 MPG to a much improved 77 MPG!

  • Our material recycling efforts keep:

    • 8.5 tons of metal from being wasted and not reprocessed. [RECYCLE]

    • 350 cubic feet of unrecyclable Styrofoam from entering a landfill. [REPURPOSE]

    • Over 300 plastic bottles per month are kept out of the recycle stream by promoting, utilizing, giving away “Green Team” kitchen-grade stainless steel, double-wall, refillable water bottles. [REDUCE]

    • More than 28 pounds of plastic material per month is diverted from landfill to being recycled [RECYCLE]

Our other targeted materials that we strive to apply Green Initiative action to include: cardboard, aluminum cans, machine coolant, paper usage, used electronics and more!!

Past Environmental Events

The MTH Green Team participates in a number of community clean-up projects through the year.

Earth Day 2023
